On May 28, 1961, British lawyer Peter Benenson wrote a letter in reaction to the imprisonment of two students in Portugal who had raised their glasses in a toast to freedom. Benenson's action gave birth to a global human rights movement which eventually came to be known as Amnesty International.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of human rights activists and financial supporters. We work together to prevent violations of people's fundamental civil and political human rights by governments and opposition groups. AI received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 and today is among the most highly respected human rights organizations in the world.

 We take action to...

  1. Free all prisoners of conscience: people detained anywhere for their beliefs or because of their ethnic origin, sex, colour, language, national or social origin, economic status, birth, or other status, provided they have not used or advocated violence

  2. Ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners

  3. Abolish the death penalty, torture, and other cruel treatment of prisoners

  4. End political killings and “disappearances”
