May 28, 1961, British lawyer Peter Benenson wrote a letter in reaction to
the imprisonment of two students in Portugal who had raised their glasses
in a toast to freedom. Benenson's action gave birth to a global human rights
movement which eventually came to be known as Amnesty International. |

Amnesty
International of Halton Hills is working for the release of 13 Cuban "prisoners
of conscience." Their crime was speaking out against their government,
an act which is legal in most countries, and basic to the democratic process.
Many of these men have been in jail for years, some without a fair trial.
Most are in prisons far from their families, and receive inadequate medical
care.
Every month, the Halton
Hills group writes letters to Cuban officials asking for the release of
these men. You can help! Click here for the text of a sample letter you
can print and mail. Already, our letters have helped secure the release
of five other prisoners of conscience in Cuba.

of conscience" from jail in Cuba to his happy arrival in Canada,
after Amnesty Halton Hills took on his case.
